Have another look at the problem. Obama is asked to sort a constant number of items (1,000,000). So if you want to call this constant "n", then "n" is in this case 1,000,000. @feye1markie In order to make electronic circuits, the material you choose must be able to carry electric current and possess the ability to switch the current off and on electronically. The earliest circuits were controlled by mechanical switches. Then came vacuum tubes, semiconductor transistors and now silicon chip. Silicon is a neutral substrate which become semiconducting after selective kind of impurities are doped on it. Different layers of impurities are printed on the wafer as circuits.

It is just natural to squeeze the last drop of juice from it. Anyone who studied physics knows that electrons behave differently when the circuit reach such small scale. Perhaps the circuit designers can incorporate the tunneling effect into the design.

I knew diamonds where being manufactured, but I had no idea of all the modern day applications and possibilities, brought by super diamonds, as explained in the videos. I've always wondered, if semiconductor manufacturers "know" they'll hit a wall sooner or later, why race down to produce semiconductors at say 16nm process in 4-5 years, unless they know already where to go next.

I have heard about optical computer like 30 years ago. However, I don't know if they have made enough progress to out-perform silicon technology in term of the cost/benefit ratio. Check out the link in the description section. Diamond computer chip is next in line. When you can over-clock the chip with no worry of a melt down, optical chip may not be necessary.

Well, there was just one other scene that I remember that used computers. It's when Luke and Solo are in the Millenium Falcon fighting against some Imperial TIE Fighters. The "targeting computer" screen of the MF was CG'ed. Maybe the X-Wing fighters' was also? I'm not sure. The rest of the movie is all miniatures filmed against blue screen with the help of a (computer controlled) motion camera, matte paintings and such. Except for indoor and outdoor shots, of course. And lots of optical effects.

Anyone that touched Maya or a similar package probably shrieks in terror at the thought of having to input data all the time and use real analogue dials to rotate objects. In the UK for some reason is is spelt cheque, although it is said as check like the geezer in the film did, although the other kind of check is spelt the same. It does makes more sense to spell it check like in the US. Most of the spelling diffrences between you guys and us revolves around not having u's like in colour ie color in the States.
