Hey Jeff, I bought a popper yesterday at WallGreens for $9.99 and went to my local coffee house (BeanWerks) here in Asheville, NC and bought some beans. Roasted them last night- Everything went just like you said. I'm waiting a few days before I try it cause another video said the coffee is better after 3 days. Update on the "Chefmate" popcorn popper. Target (here in Hawaii) no longer sells the Chefmate popper. I recently had to replace mine and order the "Toastmaster 6203" online...it is the exact same machine as the Chefmate. Got two of them on sale for $10 each!

Unfortunately in Idaho I can't roast year round, but I still love to do it inside. I just purchased a Fresh Roast plus 8 from Sweet Marias so I don't have to deal with the chaff and I love it. Makes it all so much easier.

Great video -- well made. I do it all outside in Hawaii. I bought a new Chefmate popper at Target for $16 - almost identical. I don't use a lid and I roast 1/2 cup at a time AND get an even roast because I use a wooden spoon handle to vigorously stir the coffee beans as they roast. Start stirring after about 1.5 min. and stir about once every min for a few seconds. The friction helps release the chaff. Roast until desired color reached. Poor into a large sieve and stir to cool.

I have always had more than electronics videos. One of the first videos I did was one on coffee. I made partner because of all my content. If you look at the last 15 videos I have made only two or three have been different from what you would consider the norm. If you make any smoke at all while using the Gene Cafe, you're doing it wrong. You can get very serious dark roasts without ever setting the temperature higher than 469.

with the GeneRoast, there isnt a 'too fast' option, just a 'too long' option. You can vry the temperature to get a 'slightly' faster roast, but not 5 minutes like a hot air popper can do. Second crack will produce a tremendous amount of smoke and leave the beans oils on the outside all beaded up. My guess is that they either used a different roaster, or tried the ROn Popeil method with the Gene and "set it and forget it" and came back to find charcoal.

*sigh* i'm not here to get into a pissing contest with you about this. Roasting with a popper works great, is no doubt a lot of fun and is a valid way of roasting coffee for many people. So is the Gene cafe. So is a hottop, a behmor, a corretto, a dog bowl and heat gun and a wok on the stove. Coffee is a big world with room for lots of different ideas and tools for us ALL to enjoy. Don't be down on how other people enjoy their coffee, its not cool. That's really all I'm trying to say.

Even with the popcorn popper you have to listen for that "second pop" and closely observe the roast color and glossiness...and stop the roast right at the right time...takes some practice. WORKS GREAT FOR $16.

wow, you're really convinced that a popper can do it all, aren't you? I don't doubt that a popper can roast coffee, but just flat out roasting everything to the same colour in around 5 minutes is not the approach I, as a Gene user, am looking for. Personally, want more control so that I can roast each bean in the way best suited to it and hopefully enjoy some of the spectrum of flavour that the farmer and processors worked so hard to create. or am i just trying to talk sense to a troll?

...reason of course is they swell and get quite "bouncy") There is also the CR 100 a korean roaster (I think) they go for about $300, so all in all roasting machines are simply bloody expensive. and I am not convinced they have to be, after all its a simple fan and rotation process with some heat resistant plastic. So why doesn't some clued up engineering student get onto it? Make a roaster around the $150 mark or less that works as well as the others......make a bloody fortune

Not knocking the Gene, great machine, but down here in N.Z they go for about $800, the bemor about $550 basically taking it out of the reach of "Joe Bloggs". Didn't realise but as its being used outside I am presuming it's also not smokeless?Now me and my trusty Cascade popcorn maker have been doing this for about 6 months. It has cost me $20 for the machine a dollar for a wooden stirring spoon and a baked bean can cut down its length( I put this in as the beans tend to jump out later the......

@markpianoman i believe because the slower you roast a bean the less acidic the flavor, (gormet coffee isall about the flavor) plus regulating the temperature changes the roast from a med roast to a dark roast. And as you can see, you can roast a larger portion with this machine.

I don't have the Gene roaster (yet) but in regards to drum roasters vs pop corn poppers, my understanding is that it makes a significant difference how long the roasting process takes in terms of developing the body of flavor in the bean. Speed roasting in 5 minutes vs. slow roasting in 17 minutes makes a difference in the flavor of the roasted coffee. This makes perfect sense as the same is true for the cooking of other types of food.

yeah, its because the Gene takes a while to cool down. You can do an emergency stop and dump the beans manually, which obviously cools them much quicker. If you use the programmed cooling cycle, I guess anything helps to get the temp down quickly, although I tend to point an actual fan at the roaster rather than fan it with a piece of cardboard.

I don't think that anyone who home roasts would deny that a popper is very effective. But it is very basic and can only do a limited batch size. I can tell that you are happy with it and roast all of your coffee exactly the same way, which is fine. For you. For me, I wanted a larger volume and more control, so I bought a Gene. Simple. Horses for courses!

You can't control the temperature; however, you just take the beans out when they are done. I roast mine for 5 minutes (give or take a few seconds)...depending on the weather and temp outside. Works great for a nice dark brown with some gloss from the bean oils. Perfect as far as I'm concerned.

I bought a Gene Cafe Roaster more than a year ago and I am very pleased with it. I have tried just about every home roasting method including a modified hot air popcorn popper, cast iron skillet, whirly pop popcorn popper, a wok, a dutch oven, regular oven on a cookie sheet and a heat gun. The Gene Cafe beats them all hands down. Yes, it isn't cheap, but it is worth it if you are serious about home roasting your coffee and you want consistent results.

I've found that one of the finest aspects of this roaster is its capability to roast evenly whether or not your batch of greens is big or small... I've had good results with 50 to 250 grams. I've done over 500 roasts over the past 5 months split between two gene cafes. An absolutely fantastic machine. I've never had one of them break down.

The BM is a Breville brand. The dough setting can be selected manually (Setting 8) and it starts at a time of 1h 28m and counts down. I never get down further than 1h but I assume it will go longer. The exhaust fan is sucking air down thru the beans and venting out thru the bottom.

You'll find more than you wanted to know here at CoffeeSnobs forums :-) You'll find these types of roasters referred to as "corretto" type roasters, named after the CS forum member that originated the idea of combining a bread machine with a heatgun to roast coffee. The concept has really evolved and you'll find people with all variety of HG/BM roasters. And a passion for quality home roasted coffee.

You can certainly roast darker than shown in this video. Depending on the bean, I like to go to second crack or just before. But I've certainly taken roasts beyond second crack. At that point it's all about your cooling setup to pull heat from the beans QUICKLY and halt the roasting process FAST.

FG... You will enjoy much more control and gentler roasting with the HG/BM roaster. Much kinder on the beans that rocket-roasts from poppers :) The temps are in centigrade. Bear in mind that I use these as a guide only because the actual temp of the bean mass would be different. You can modify the BM to insert a temp probe that reads from within the bean mass during roasting, but I have not bothered with that yet.

of cutting off about half of the adjustable stem to make the whole thing shorter. It was way too tall in it's original guitar configuration. Then I just use (again lying around in the shed) some weights off a dumb-bell, over the two long legs of the stand to counter the weight of the HG. I probably would have designed/constructed something simpler and more elegant if I didn't have the guitar stand handy

We saw these guys in home power magazine, they were using a large old satellite dish and crude but innovative/effective equipment. I like that they are advancing. this new set up is quite elegant well done for those making reflectors they recommend many small reflectors on a bang for the buck basis

It can be a bit tricky because its always variable time based on how many beans you put in and the size of the pot. I UNDER-ROASTED many of the beans I did when I first started. As you are roasting, there is a oil that forms on the outside. Youll also notice the beans popping. After they pop the first time, I think its safe to say you can drink it without it tasting like old socks. I like mine roasted a lot. I guague finish time when they form a lot of oil on the outside of the bean.

I roast my green beans with a $16 Chefmate popcorn popper from Target...works great! It takes 5.5 minutes to get a dark-brown (city+) roast. I can roast 1/2 cup of green beans which yields about 1 cup of roasted beans. Cant believe anyone would spend hundreds of dollars on a "coffee roaster."

It really depends on the taste you want from the beans. It also depends on the type of bean. However, normally the way you know when they are ready is when they start to get oil forming on the outside of the beans. The beans will pop about two times during roasting. This is called first and second crack. After second crack you should see the oil start to form. Doing it on the stove like this it took me 45 min - an hour.

Thank you very much for posting this. I had thought it was odd when all the tutorials I was seeing for coffee roasting involved special equipment... after all, coffee beans weren't originally roasted in machines!

1st crack and 2nd crack are two stages of the roast. It's the sound of the bean cracking slightly as the moisture inside escapes. YOu should hear 1C about 3-4 minutes in, 2C about 2-3 minutes after that. You can hear them, they sound a little like popcorn popping. I always go at least a minute past 2nd crack, they just don't taste "done" to me before that.

Thank you Jpud1. How do you disconnect the Stir Crazy Heat. I was able to find thee Stir Crazy Popcorn Poppers. One from Good Will, but it didn't have a power cord. I found two more fully tested at another threft shop. Since I know I'll have to modify one I thought I would keep the other two incase the first one doesn't work when I mess with it.

I use the stir crazy only for agitation of the coffee beans ... makes for a more even roast. I disconnected the the stir crazy heat and replaced the center spindle with a metal bolt (the convection oven was melting the original S/C spindle) . Time and temps vary depending on coffee type, outside weather conditions and 1st batch vs 2nd batch, etc. On average I roast a pound of coffee to a full city roast in about 20min. Temp ranges from 450 to 500.

Don't know how old this is, but it's awesome. I see you used four pieces of equipment. 1, Fan, 2, Trash Can & crate, 3, AeroMatic Convection Oven top, and 4, Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper base. This was due to the arm right? How long did you set the convection oven and what temps? Was it about 500 degrees? Again, you did an awesome job. Can wait to put something together myself.
