Just thought I'd chime in. I'm really appreciative of all the pour over videos of late. You may think they are wordy or dull but I think they're great and informative. I like the fine details you add about measurements etc I'm glad you have the time to do all of it. It makes me look again at what I'm doing to make sure I'm getting the most out of my ccd. just recieved my CCD from you today (along with a 20lb back of Kenyan green beans. i cannot say how good of coffee this thing makes. i think it would be pretty slick if they incorporated a spring loaded timer that made a ding at 1 and 3 minutes... maybe put it in the handle or something. thanks for the video. i made some this afternoon and the grind was much coarser and the results were not nearly as good as the cup i'm enjoying now. thanks!

Some additiona data on water volume measurement vs. water weight: As water heats, it loses density. At XXX degrees, 1mL of pure (distilled) water weighs 1g, but for 200F distilled water, 1mL weighs only ~0.963g. Hence, at 200F, 350g of water takes up ~363mL of volume. In practice, your numbers may be slightly different, as the mineral content of water changes the density --- these numbers are for distilled water, with no mineral content.

dirkadoods, I've been reading you want to think layers if you're having problems with your grinds not soaking all the way through. Pour 1/3 of the water, 1/2 your grinds, 1/3 water, 1/2 grinds, and your last 1/3 water in that order and you should have a fully saturated coffee grind. However you can easily make Cold brew with 2 mason jars and a strainer.

Crossing my fingers this works now too ... I set up at 7p and drained to my decanter around 8a. The top grounds were damp but not all were wet. There were soaked grounds in the center and around the edges. My coffee & chicory came out as a full, dark concentrate. I took pictures at each step but don't know how to post them here. I would say the grounds only saturate halfway to maybe 3/4 of the way through. I use the French Market varieties, French Roast or coffee with chickory and it's never as dark as it should be. I'm always disappointed.

Hmm ... I can't think why it's not working for you. My concentrate comes out extra extra dark because it's Coffee & Chicory (which makes a stronger brew in any coffee maker). Does the coffee only saturate halfway through? Let me know so I can help troubleshoot!

Be sure and buy a Toddy If you like to spend a half-hour cleaing up the mess, otherwise you might want to look into the Hourglass Coffee Maker. I have both. The Toddy has a filter made from some sort of fiber that gets clogged up with grounds plus you need to dig it out of te grounds once you are done. The Hourglass has a Stainless steel filter that you just empty out and rinse. I will never use my Toddy again. They may be a bit more money but Hourglass is a much nicer system.

I've refined my technique since this video. I don't add the coffee until the water is %90 into the top chamber. I stir gently and let the goods steep for 2.5 minutes. It is never bitter, always smooth and flavorful. Nummy!

I had a Bodum Santos right before Hurricane Katrina and it got destroyed with everything else. I asked my wife for a new one and I hope I get it now that I know it works on a smooth top electric stove. And YES they make AWESOME coffee. They also work with vintage Silex glass filter rods too.

There are 2 needles on your brewer, an inlet needle and exit needle. Due to some packaging errors, coffee grounds can get past the filter and lodge in either needle. Take a paper clip and run it through both needles. Then run a purge cycle (just water). That should work.

I find the Breville 700XL is way better investment for a daily use machine. It's the Cadillac of k cup brewers this one is a good one for the cottage though.

Good Review. Obviously we are all coffee drinkers but is the quality as good as a french press? I have an electric tea kettle and press both costing no more than 40 bucks vs 150. So I'd like to know what the difference in taste is.

Carlos, great review. I was sitting on the fence for a while and after watching your review went out to BBB and picked one up today. The B70 is great. Used the 20% off and got it for $135. They must have changed the pumps in the unit, because it's a lot quieter than it sounds in your video. The new pump hums like a fish tank air pump and is super quiet. I made a quick cup of coffee and it's great. Thanks for the review. Good stuff.

scottallentvh, I'm with not sure why so many people gave you thumbs down but I'll also stick to my French press. I admit that Keurig machines are convenient if you just want one cup but they require too much packaging and waste that the damage outweighs the convenience. You can make just one cup of coffee w/ a press and have freshly ground beans, though yes, you'll have to boil the water. I got my press for $12. I think that's worth boiling water against a $150 machine that creates trash.

I agree with belavet. In this day and age, using this much packaging is pretty disgusting, if not downright criminal. A filter is a fraction of the material of one of these cups. Several companies offer coffee filters made from post-consumer recycled paper. Better yet, use a French press -- no paper and makes a better cup of coffee than drip any day.

That really depends on how you dose the coffee grounds. It's bit different than in drip coffee, but not too much. The water spends some time in upper globe, so it gets to steep longer than in drip coffee. It's also good idea to make little experimenting in the beginning to find the right amount of coffee grounds that work for you with this kind of coffee maker.

I've tried percolators and it's not good. The problem with percolators is that they boil the coffee as it gets passed through the grounds many times. Boiling coffee creates a burnt over brewed acidic flavor. This vacuum method is about as close to a French Press as you can get, with an entertaining show to boot.

@threemilechild I use a stainless steel pot, which can be cleaned with soap and water. However i usually just rinse it out with water. But coffee oils do not build up on it. Some people prefer the aluminum pots for this reason and let it 'age', building up with oils.

I was warned that the coffee will be bad for a little while if you don't use it regularly. Part of the reason why you clean it with only water, not with soap, is because oils deposit onto the aluminum and keep it from making the coffee taste off, so, presumably, if your oil deposits are too old it will make your coffee taste old. If your first few pots come out tasting funny, don't give up. Also, my friend empties hers before she makes coffee, not after -- but she uses it every day.

Hi xraymond, A percolator is a brewing system and a stove top espresso maker is another brewing system and they are not the same. The percolator brewing system recycles the coffee over and over again to keep brewing that's why the taste tends to be bitterer than any other coffee maker. Stove top extracts coffee under the pressure of water vapor and produces the coffee with the less bitterness and most aromas compare to a percolator. I hope this help you;) Luc
