I'd never use an IBM machine at home. Always will be Mac till I die. It's what I know. This advert is pretty damn clever, spoofing Orwell's work, but using it so cleverly it appeals to the masses. I loved this ad. Didn't know WTF it was about back then. Trouble is, Steve Jobs has become a parody of that ad through his lame marketing. Orwell has been pastiched so many times I can't even spell the word, and Jobs is still in one when most of us aren't. Ho-hum, keep the aspidistra flying!!

After reading this book it made me very sad to think that a lot of children think Big Brother as a fun and pointless TV show, Big Brother was something so much more sinister, so dark than most could even imagine. I think kids in high school these days should read 1984 so that they know the true meaning of Big Brother, appreciate the freedom of language and can see how media can change our thoughts without us even realizing. Amazing story from the truly wonderful mind of George Orwell!

When the film first came out I thought that the Eurythmics soundtrack/ theme song was wrong for the bleak dystopia of the book and the film. The concept of 1984 was that it could be anytime in the future, but this synthpop song firmly roots the film in the real 1984, and nothing dates a film like a contemporary pop song for a theme tune. Some studio exec who'd never even heard of Orwell probably got cold feet when he saw how depressing the film looked to the all important yoof demographic.

Think about it though. It isn't just fear it's doubt. Those two combined create more of a weakness then love creates strength. If people ever let something like this happen, it will be over an extremely slow course of time. like frogs being boiled. People wouldn't overthrow it because it would be nature to them. The party gets rid of free thinking, so why question it? so maybe a few would, but they can be done away with or "changed". It's very logical really. no one wants to risk their own life.

Well maybe we are. But people discussing this matter tend to forget that a lot of people see through these lies, especially the governments. I'm not saying that people like us (even considering something like propaganda) are the masses, because clearly we aren't, I'm just saying that symbols all have different meanings but the root to those ideas are still the same. And your idea seems appropriate, still people have the power to change. That's the only thing separating us from the animals.

i have noticed that since the olympics in 1984 the style of ladies ice skating tights has changed, they now go over the entire top of the boot to tidy the image of the female skater, it also stops any flik ice getting in the boot

Thanks for the upload, this has helped piece together a very weird memory from my childhood. Apparently my mother used to tell me that when this particular music video came on I would ritually sit down and listen to it. And when it would play on the radio I just would stop and nothing could tear me from that song as a infant. And now twenty-five years later I can find out what was it about this video that drew me to it.....

This song always reminds me of a traveling sales job I had in 1985...I think of US 71 just south of Ashdown, Arkansas (about as far as you could get from Andrew, George and the UK at the time) in the summertime, where the land gets flat as a pancake a few miles above Texas and Louisiana and you can speed up when the road turns four-lane after being curvy and narrow. "Everything she wants" would be playing when I could finally get in range of the Shreveport/Texarkana stations.
