I just picked this up a few days ago and was interested in seeing how you felt about this. Although I thought the beer was very complex and very good.. as well as very strong I found that the coconut and macadamia nut flavor was rather non-existent. The coffee and chocolate flavors are very prominent but I was hoping for more coconut and macadamia flavor. Did you find the balance to be a little off between all of the flavors or did all of those nutty tones really come out for you?

Company i work for they have a cappuccino machine. I'm guessing is powder an instant coffee. It is horrible. An they only bring out the coffee burner that makes regular coffee when they do charity events. They are cheap an don't wanna buy a machine like this one unless it was donate to them.

I bought this machine last week. I think the rubber tip is to allow people with no training to get some decent froth. I don't use the rubber tip. I was a barista for a little while. I keep the tip right at the surface from the start, just so you can hear the air getting sucked in next to the tip. Also, use a pitcher that was in the freezer or fridge. The colder the milk the more time you get to froth before it's hot. I love this machine. It's not really loud at all either.

actually to clean the machine you don't need any filter, simply let white vinegar set partially in the water holder over night, or you can just run a couple of cycles of vinegar through the machine 's pump (e.g.) let it brew a full cup of hot vinegar repeat this twice, then rinse with plain water. for extra parts I would call Mr. Coffee directly.

I decided to keep the ecmp50. I found a quick & easy fix for the thin crema. Since it uses a pressure basket (a 1 piece filter & pressure chamber w/ single drip hole), it clogs easily after several pulls reducing foam & slowing flow. Solution: run a brew cycle with empty basket often. This purges silt & other gunk clogging the pressure basket. Remove & carefully dry the hot pf, dose it, tamp & polish, & it'll pull a faster/hotter brew cycle. The resulting crema is richer w/ sweeter liquor too.

I was originally intending this to be a starter machine. But my attempts to get formal barista training failed So the machine really hasn't been used all that much as i mainly use my drip maker now. Might be a great machine if it made thicker crema. I use a clear cup. After tinkering with dozens of expert suggestions & various grinds & half a lb of burr milled Illy beans (some experts say the grinder is as important as the machine) I'm at a loss how to get better crema. The beans produce crema God Shots on my friend's $600 Rancilio w/filtered water. Even he can't get good crema using my Mr. Coffee. The steam wand is too short & micro foam is out of the question too. I'm returning it!

Like you I froth with only the metal tip below the milk surface. It screams. I raise the tip to toward the top of the milk until the screaming stops. Continue raising the tip during the frothing process. As the froth nears the top submerge the tip a bit and leave until your fingers almost burn on the metal container. You're done. At first I was worried because the espresso extraction pump sound was so different from the milk frothing steam sound ... but I got used to it. The results: Great

@giganoto Why not? I been heating the water this way for about three years now. Its one of the options for heating the water listed in the instructions that come with the Aeropress. And since I can control the time in the microwave precisely, it is the best way to achieve a consistent temperature for the water.

I'll leave a comment since the previous one was nearly a year ago. Thanks for the demo. I own many coffee gadgets including a French press. I don't have an aeropress but if it's not too expensive I might buy one to try it out. I started roasting my own beans about a year ago using just about every inexpensive method that youtube presents but 2 mos ago I got the Behmor 1600. I've had good & bad roasts btw. The Aero looks like it might be a welcome member of my pantheon of coffee memorabilia.

I have the aeropress and it is a pretty neat little coffee gizmo. But I don't consider its product to be real espresso (it takes 9 bars of pressure to do it right, which I doubt you can attain with an aeropress). But it is still a good cup. Nice demo. I just purchased a moka pot, and now that is my preferred brewing method. I actually like a little body to my coffee, and the aeropress tends to produce too "clean" a cup for my taste. But it makes a nice brew for iced lattes or for use in cooking.

For a while, I did the 205 (brewing temp) thing. It produced a more "French Press" style; bolder flavor but also more of the "off" flavors. Like many things in life, it's about trade-offs, compromise, "n'er the twain shall meet", you can't have your cake and eat it too. Maybe I'll try making half in the plunger pot, and half in the aeropress. The quest for the perfect cup continues.

Interesting you should mention this. Lately I have been getting my water to about 205 and spooning in maybe 4 or 5 spoonfulls of it, and then mixing it around to saturate the ground coffee...and then adding the rest of the water (at that point probably hovering in the mid 190's or low 190's and doing the full mix. Works well. This 175 stuff is just not on target.

My latest Americano experimentation: -- Dialed in the Zassenhaus as per their "official" instructions to a little coarser than a drip grind. -- TWO Aeropress scoops of beans to about 12 oz. of water. -- BREW at 175 degrees BUT heat the rest of the water to 205 degrees -- ADD the rest of the hot water to the Aeropresso Smooth AND hot. Damn fine coffee!

Almost anyone can make a pot of coffee, but making the kind of coffee that spawned the industrial revolution and made the USA the world economic superpower--that requires years of experience and specialized equipment. When it's made this way, I call it "Liquid Inspiration" rather than mere coffee. What!? Stuff and nonsense! You simply haven't saturated your tissues with caffein! It's easy to do-- build up to it, an extra cup a day a week. In no time you'll be enjoying a nice cup before bedtime. Like me.

Nice one, Eliot! Very entertaining. Of course, I'm sitting here watching it, drinking my tea. I like coffee, but it doesn't like me; it upsets my stomach. Once, I made the mistake one time of drinking coffee on a boat. That was the only time I've ever felt seasick.

The Brikka makes stronger coffee. The funnel holds beans equivalet of a Moka 3 cup but only produces a double cup. The taste is quite different. Moka has a slight burnt smell/taste and less texture.

The Brikka makes Crema, the brown foam you see on espresso made on much more expensive machines. The Mokka Express make a strong coffee with out (persistent) creama. The taste of coffee made on the brikka is closer to espresso than that of the Moka Express, thus i think I'll recommend the 2 cup Brikka version.

Assuming you are using a Brikka -not a Moka pot, I see no reason why you should not get creama -but it may take a little practice. Not all coffee is equally good at making creama. Try to find some pre-ground Lavazza Qualita Rossa. It may or may not suit your taste but it is ideal for perfecting you technique. Dont press the coffee, use correct amout of water, and experiment with the heat. You should probably start at a medium setting. When you get the hang of it you can switch to a good coffee.

Please keep in mind that the regular Moka pot and the Brikka are (despite visual similarities) two very different beasts. The Brikka pre-soaks the coffee for perhaps 2 min. while building up preasure of 2 bar, and releases the coffee in just a few seconds.

How come I can never get my espresso as foamy and thick as you do? There has to be something wrong with how I do it. I usually fill the coffee grind to the top, fill my water up to the "point." I put it on stove and turn it to high heat. But the coffee produced are just dark, strong coffee, not the thick and foamy espresso.

I have found all of your tips to be very useful, thankyou again. Indeed the running commentary here is much more concise and informative than elsewhere. At this point I am finding sazzenhaus grinders to be out of stock in every single shop I've visited or searched through online. I believe zassenhaus have slowed or even stopped producing their beautiful hand mills =(

A few additional comments on my experiences with brewing on the brikka: 1. Don't use more water than suggested with the enclosed measuring cup. 2. Don't press the coffee beans. Tap the funnel to set the coffee. 3. Don't be affraid to use good coffe with a little Robusta - you may be positively surprised. 4. I have modelled my grind after that of a pre ground Lavazza Qualita Rossa. That is the most popular domestic coffee in Italy, and I am sure the Bialetti designers made sure that this grind would work well with the Brikka. The grind is finer than drip coffee, but not as fine as espresso grind. (I use a Zassenhaus hand grinder which works fine) -- and yes it is a wonderful pragmatic device.

Spot on! I have indeed been using soap which will stop now. I was afraid that this was a characteristic of getting the aluminium based bialetti instead of stainless steel. Its such a fun and interesting device, and a considerably cheaper and faster solution for good coffee. Thanks again for taking the time to give your excellent and detailed advice. This gives a slightly firmer and more persistent creama and you avoid the burnt tones associated with boiled coffee. The mettalic tang should disappear quickly if you just rinse and wipe it after use - Soap is a no no, but in order for this to work you have to use it frequently - almost daily - otherwise the thin layer of residue will go stale and taste bad. I have to brew 3-4 times after a week of vacation before the coffee is drinkable.

I had to fine tune my brewing technique over a longer period of time. The video is not completely representative of my current way of brewing. The temperature should be ajusted so that the release of coffee is fast and steady but not explosive. Also - I remove the Brikka from the heat while the coffee is still releasing and pour just before stops releasing and the steam starts.

watching your clip convinced me to get a brikka in the first place so i thank you! i have a new 2 cup, made about 20 coffees now i am using high heat using an electric stove and it takes about 3 minutes it seems the result is somewhat bitter - possibly burnt - and it still has an odd mettalic tang to it i have read one person on brikkalovers insist that using a gas stove gives better results - have you done much experimentation yourself?
