Nespresso is better than keurig. The machine is more reliable and I can make better lattes and coffee without worrying if the machine would turn off by itself or if the pump not working after a month.

my b70 was a lemon. A month in and the machine would turn off by itself when brewing.Another problem it would say its brewing but no coffee/water would come out. But Keurigs sending me another. Hopefully its not a repetitive problem. Im pretty sure i'm not the only person with the same problems with these machines. The pumps are pretty bad

they need to make a 1500W version of the B30 Mini. The mini has a superior design to their larger ones. The footprint of the mini is much more reasonable and it is the most stylish in the family. It is the most simple to use and loads just enough water for one cup so I do not have to fill that big annoying reservoir. The only problem with the Mini is that it is only 700W and takes 2-3 minutes to make a cup of coffee. but it takes at least twice as long to make a cup of coffee.

We have one of these things at work. Not only is it very noisy, it makes terrible coffee. The bitterness in coffee is caused by heat during the brewing process, as any drinker of cappuccino or espresso can tell you. If you want some good coffee, make cold-brew coffee concentrate from freshly ground beans, prefferably recently roasted. Add the concentrate to a cup of hot water for hot coffee, cold water, or ice for a nice iced cappuccino without a trace of bitterness.

Seriously, my family has worked in the coffee industry for years-starting with our coffee plantations in Brazil- and I can assure you the fridge is the wrong place to store your coffee after you open it. Before opening the coffee package you can store it in the fridge, but once you open the package your coffee grounds/beans need to go in an air tight container. In the fridge/freezer you will add unwanted moisture/dew to your coffee altering the taste.

I still think storing coffee in the fridge/freezer is better. I keep mine in the freezer because it can sit in there for months, and when I open the lid it still smells like I just bought it. Probably because cold preserves things lol.

Percolated, drip, I don't care. As long as it isn't instant, it's good. I had some Folgers Crystals and it tastes like crap. Either way, I love vintage, and retro media is timeless. It was a much simpler time. And the taste of brewing it yourself (I use Folgers, but I have had Cafe du Monde and it's great) is better than buying it, because you made it yourself. I would rather have a coffee pot in my kitchen over a Starbucks any day.

Seriously, stick with drip. Like all of us old farts, I was raised on percolated coffee. It was always a bit hit or miss. Also, it's strong partly due to the cup measurements on the pot being way off. It's the same now with coffee pots. I think they do it on purpose to get us to use more coffee. LOL If you like it strong, go with straight espresso or a french press. French press is gooood.

Thankies so much for posting this. :) I have been trying to work out how to use my pyrex perculator for ages!!Um one thing though pyrex in the 70's was designed for gas stoves.. To use on the coil stoves etc (electric) there was a little heat spreader to use.. I dont know if you can still get them though... Mum gave me manuals on using pyrex that said this :) Once again Thankyou!

I use a percolator every morning for my coffee. I hate the modern auto drip ones because they shut off after 2 hours and it takes me about 3 hours to go through a pot. It also keeps it very hot. Mine is an electric GE Percolator from the 1950's and works fine every day. It belonged to my grandmother who bought it new.

It might have been! I still use some of the recipes I learned in home economics class in middle school (all students, both boys and girls, took both home ec. and shop class). The school later did away with both those classes which is sad. Cooking, sewing, woodworking and metalworking are such valuable skills.

I doubt the formaldehyde is in sufficient quantities to cause any trouble. If it were, don't you think more coffee drinkers would have cancer? A bleached filter has less "papery" flavor than an unbleached filter, and is therefore superior.

The water temperature also matters. That would probably be acceptable with a bunn or a cuisinart, they get the water hot enough, but most automatics don't. the other thing is that a chemex is about 1/5 the price of a good bunn coffee maker.

This is merely a different way to brew coffee that produces a different cup of coffee. I do use a french press and when I brew in the chemex I use unbleached filter papers.

Yeah, I look back on these early videos and realize I did quite a few things wrong. I have much better technique now, as well as better equipment (burr grinder FTW!), and I roast my own beans. This is great advice though and thank you for posting this, it will help others down the road.

This is poor technique. That's way too much water for a bloom; there should be practically no water dripping through. You must avoid pouring around the sides of the filter and never disturb the bed of coffee. You should also pour much more deliberately and slowly, making an effort in between to maintain a 195°-200°f temperature ?a thermometer is your friend. To each his or her own, but if you'd truly like to get everything you can out of this method take more care than this.

Your brewing temp is dropping below the ideal while you're waiting between pours. This could encourage bitter or "dirty" tasting coffee. Also, you're getting DIOXIN and FORMALDEHYDE dissolutes through that bleached paper filter. At least use an unbleached filter, or better yet, use a french press or vacuum pot. You'll have a more uniform brewing temps, and you'll brew your java more efficiently with better flavor preservation.

Hey @BrickSh0t7 that is a great vid and quite informative and detailed loved it. One thing that I noticed and thing you actually mentioned it, for this type of coffee method I would like my coffee ground a little bit more fine (just a wee bit) than what you had. And a suggestion if you would like to move up the geek level you should try the "vaccum pot" that is really geeky :-). Thank you for the video.

my chemex has a handle, makes pouring it a lot less involved, not a fan of the collared ones. It does make a damn good cup of coffee, but a press pot still makes the best cup of joe. For the OP: starbucks sells a really nice stainless 10 cup press pot for $70 that you might wanna check out, it's got an oblong "scopped" knob on top that is perfect to rest a 10lb. dumbell so you can just walk away and let it press itself. :) I alternate between my press pot, chemex, and espresso machine regularly.

coffee brewed by hand if done properly is far superior to coffee done in a machine. its the only way i brew coffee. of course it does take some effort and pratice but once you learn how the coffee behaves and are able to get the most it has to offer you will never use a machine again. first things first though- fresh roasted- fresh ground coffee is way better than store bought grounds!

My "no machine" method employs a 4 cup insulated carafe, a wide mouth plastic funnel which fits into the carafe, a plastic strainer that fits standard filter paper which is placed on top of the funnel. A use a $30 water kettle to boil water and a grinder to grind whole bean coffee. I pour the water into the grinds until it's level is just below the filter top. After several minutes a refill the filter once more. The fresh drip brewed coffee drips directly into the carafe and stays hot for hours.

That's a General Electric vacuum coffee pot with a Cory glass filter rod. Vacuum coffee can be some of the best you've ever had... just use freshly ground coffee for the best results and you'll need to use more as well. As noted, NEVER put a glass vacpot on a modern exposed electric coil type of stove. The vintage electric heaters that were made for vacpots had coils that set into a ceramic base that raised the glass pot so it didn't touch the coils.

Well done. I'd suggest a refurb Baratza Maestro grinder, $63, and some fresh, 3-5 days off roast coffee from your local micro roaster or order some online from Intelligencia in Chicago. You will be blown away! It's like the difference between a fine Belgian microbrew beer and generic white can from 7-11 or a vintage Bordeaux and box wine. The Folger's is good for 1 thing only and you've done it...demo. Treat yourself!
